My Friend – Tom
Jehlicka
By Greg Cushing
Tom Jehlicka was a gentleman. He was my
friend. Tom was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on March 2, 1964. His parents
George and Hanna left Prague in 1968 with Tom and George Junior. The fled to
Canada and have lived in Cobourg since their 3rd day on Canadian
soil.
Tom began to cycle at age 4 without aid.
His natural athletic ability was evident throughout his life. From All Ontario
Bantam Championship hockey teams to moto-cross to road/mountain biking and golf,
Tom excelled to high levels of performance. Tom was a tough competitor and
shrewd winner when on the bike. Petty issues made little difference when it came
to the big picture – winning.
Tom had many gifts but his greatest
attribute had to be his ability to teach others. Tom could argue a point but
avoid conflict. Tom was firm but respectful. Most of all Tom had the uncanny
knack of patience when it came to helping somebody understand more about some
topic he had interest in.
When it came to riding, Tom could ride
along with a beginner or hammer with a pro. When it came to electronics, he
could talk tech to an expert salesman and then turn around and explain it all in
layman’s terms. Tom did not sweat the small stuff and did not jump to
conclusions.
Tom died July 7, 2000 when he succumbed to
a 19 month battle with multiple sclerosis. He actually died of pneumonia because
he was unable to sit up. At over six feet tall, when he died Tom weighed less
than 100 pounds. He suffered immense pain but through it all he still taught
others. His patience and his acceptance of his due meant that Tom had more
important matters to deal with.
Tom Jehlicka was a good son, a good
friend, a patient teacher and a tough, rugged competitor. Tom was courteous,
respectful, kind, resourceful, creative, firm, committed and successful. Tom
Jehlicka was a gentleman.
